Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) says she was assaulted at a foster youth advocacy event earlier this week; witnesses say it was just a handshake. Whatever the truth, the South Carolina Republican sure would be a lot happier if the media stopped reporting on it. Mace told far-right influencer Benny Johnson Thursday she believes the reporting amounts to defamation, and warned that media outlets covering the story better watch their backs. “I have a warning for any media outlet that says I wrongly, falsely accused this guy of physically accosting me, of assaulting me,” she told Johnson. “That is defamation. And so I would be walking on eggshells if I were you,” she said with a giggle. The congresswoman also accused anyone who disputes her characterization of the interaction of “victim-shaming.” “This guy came in for what I thought was going to be a friendly handshake, and I know the difference between a passionate handshake and a violent one, and here I sit here today with an injury from it,” she said. Mace also shared a photo of herself wearing an arm sling and a brace on social media Thursday. The photo was immediately ridiculed by Natalie Johnson, a former Mace staffer, who called it “a pathetic ploy for attention.” “This is the same woman who told staff, myself included, during Jan. 6 that she wanted to get ‘punched in the face’ by a rioter so she could get on TV,” Johnson said on X, formerly Twitter. While Mace says she was “physically accosted,” witnesses speculate it’s what James McIntyre, the man who shook her hand, said ― not how he acted ― that set Mace off. McIntyre, the co-founder of a foster care advocacy group, reportedly told Mace, “trans youth are also foster youth, and they need your support.” Don't let this be the end of the free press. Elliott Hinkle, a foster youth advocate and consultant on foster issues who was at the event, told The Washington Post that McIntyre reached out with both hands to shake Mace’s hand while delivering his message. Mace has become increasingly fixated on anti-trans legislation. “It didn’t look like an assault or intended aggression,” Hinkle said. Capitol Police arrested the 33-year-old after the incident. McIntyre, a co-founder of the Illinois chapter of Foster Care Alumni of America who was named “Public Citizen Of The Year” in 2019 by the Illinois chapter of the National Association Of Social Workers, has pleaded not guilty . It's that time of year again: Holiday feasts are looming, and so are those dreaded leftovers. Of course, initially, everyone loves leftovers — but even if you employ , after warming up the same old stuffing for the 4th or 5th time, hate may not be a strong enough word to describe how you feel. But before you start cleaning out your fridge indiscriminately, hold on to that unassuming ham bone and use it for your next comforting homemade dish as winter approaches. Some scraps are worth keeping. Please turn that near-trash into treasure by using it as a secret ingredient for rich, hearty soups that warm the soul. When it comes to flavor, ham bones pack a wallop, easily transforming a simple broth into something amazing. What do you have in mind? Is a classic clam chowder, smoky bean stew, or creamy potato soup on the menu? Regardless of your decision, the addition of a ham bone will really make the dish stand out and create some lovely flavors. So before you throw them out, here's how you can use leftover ham bones to create winter meals that feel like a warm hug on a cold day. Ham bones make soups better If you've ever wondered why soups like split pea or navy bean have such a deep, smoky flavor, the answer is often a ham bone. It adds layers of richness and saltiness as it simmers, infusing the broth with the essence of the meat. Ham bones are particularly great for soups that benefit from a savory undertone, such as lentil soup. It's even a great way to . Two of my absolute favorite recipes that use leftover ham bones are corn chowder and cabbage soup. The smokiness from the ham is a match made in heaven with the sweetness that comes out in either dish. The key to unlocking that flavor is giving the bone time to work its magic. Add it to your soup pot along with aromatics like onions, garlic, and celery, and let it simmer low and slow. As the bone breaks down, it releases collagen and gelatin, which not only enhance the flavor, but gives the soup a luxurious, velvety texture. And don't forget: The bits of ham still clinging to the bone will fall off into the soup, adding extra meatiness to every bite. Ham stock 101 If you're not ready to make soup right away, why not use your ham bone for a versatile ham stock? Making stock is simple, and it's a great way to stretch your leftovers even further. Just toss the bone into a large pot with water, a few carrots, celery stalks, and a couple of bay leaves. Simmer for a few hours, strain, and voilà — you have a flavorful base for countless winter dishes. Don't be skeptical of this bone broth because you usually hear about beef or ; this one is a winner for sure. Ham stock freezes beautifully, so you can store it in portioned containers and pull it out whenever you need a quick flavor boost. Use it as a base for soups, stews, or even to cook grains like rice or barley for an extra layer of savory flavor. It's an easy, economical way to make the most of your leftovers while ensuring you're never far from a comforting homemade meal. RecommendedNone
British Columbia Premier David Eby said Canada must approach Donald Trump's plan to impose a 25 per cent U.S. tariff on Canadian goods from a position of strength, as business, trade and community organizations called for quick action on the trade threat. Eby said premiers and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau would meet this week to discuss "our strategic approach" to the U.S. president-elect's plan to impose the tariff on Canadian and Mexican imports immediately after his inauguration on Jan. 20, unless action was taken to stem the cross-border flow of migrants and illegal drugs. The B.C. premier made the comments Tuesday in a speech to the annual convention of the B.C. Federation of Labour in Vancouver. "Obviously, this will be devastating to workers on both sides of the border," he said. "Both in the U.S. and in Canada, the impact on families will be profoundly significant." Canada and the U.S. have long been top trading partners, on imports as well as exports, and the strength of this relationship put Canada in a solid position when it came to Trump's tariff threat, Eby said. "We have more in common with Americans than what separates us," he said. "We buy more American stuff than France, than China and Japan and the United Kingdom combined. So, we are negotiating, I believe, from a position of strength." Eby called for a united Canadian approach to the proposed U.S. tariff. "We're going to stand together and we're going to ensure we negotiate from a position of strength and that we negotiate hard and ensure any decisions that are made are in the best interests of British Columbians and Canadians," he said. Eby acknowledged improvements could be made on Canada's border, especially when it came to policing contraband and illegal drugs. "We've called repeatedly, for example, for port police to ensure what comes into B.C. is not contraband, is not illicit drugs or precursor chemicals," he said. "These are things that we can do to make life better here in B.C., as well as respond to concerns that have been raised south of the border." Trump issued a statement on social media on Monday saying Canada and Mexico had the power to solve their border issues, which he called a "long simmering problem." Opposition B.C. Conservative Leader John Rustad called for the immediate recall of the B.C. legislature Tuesday to provide funding to secure borders to stop the flow of illegal drugs and migrants. Business organizations in B.C. called on the provincial and federal government to immediately address Trump's tariff plan, which they said would will hurt businesses. The proposal would have significant consequences for B.C. businesses of all sizes and would harm communities and workers across the province, said Fiona Famulak, B.C. Chamber of Commerce president and chief executive officer. “Ottawa must take this news seriously and work proactively with representatives of the incoming U.S. administration immediately to address the issue before the tariffs are implemented," she said in a statement. "We cannot afford to wait until January to take action." The Metro Vancouver city of Surrey, which has two U.S. border crossings, said in a statement the proposed tariff would have severe implications for the city's business community. Most of B.C.'s manufacturing industry is located in Surrey and the city is also home to many thriving import-export-reliant businesses, which would face increased costs and potential job losses if the U.S. tariff was imposed, said Jasroop Gosal, Surrey Board of Trade spokesman. The B.C. Lumber Trade Council said the proposed tariff would hurt U.S. consumers and homebuyers by driving up the cost of building materials from Canada, while the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade said the U.S. was B.C.’s most important trading partner, accounting for 54 per cent of the province’s commodity exports in 2023. "It is imperative that we engage constructively with our U.S. counterparts to advance our collective interests," said Bridgitte Anderson, board of trade president and CEO. "This should act as a wake-up call to all levels of government that a new Team Canada approach is required," said Anderson. "We saw the reaction in the markets, and we saw the (Canadian) dollar fall. The shock waves were quite significant and we shouldn't underestimate what the impact of this could be." She said some of B.C.’s top exports to the U.S. are natural gas, softwood lumber, agricultural products, and minerals and metals. But some economists and policy analysts warned against falling for familiar Trump negotiation tactics. “He likes nothing more than to see his negotiating partners trembling in fear or running around screaming with their hair on fire," said Carlo Dade, trade and infrastructure director at the Alberta-based Canada West Foundation. "So, we need to react, but we need to do so with prudence, with firmness, with thought and without fear and panic." Prof. Nicolas Schmitt said the tariff proposal was a threat rather than a solid policy decision. “We should not panic about the 25 per cent threat right now," said Schmitt, who teaches economics at Simon Fraser University. "It's a bullying tactic. It's like bullying in the schoolyard." B.C. government data says the province's exports to the U.S. in the first half of 2024 were worth $16.9 billion, down 1.1 per cent compared to the same period last year. The U.S. is by far B.C.'s largest export destination, with mainland China in second place receiving goods worth $4.9 billion in the year to July, up 13.2 per cent. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Nov. 26, 2024. Dirk Meissner and Nono Shen, The Canadian PressIt's harder now than ever to win on the PGA Tour. The depth of professional golf has only grown in recent years, and a new wave of young stars enters the sport every year and makes their mark on the PGA Tour. In 2024, there were 15-first-time winners, meaning almost 33 percent of all Tour events were won by first timers. Then there was Scottie Scheffler, who won seven PGA Tour events in addition to his win at the Olympics and Hero World Challenge. Xander Schauffele won a pair of majors. Rory McIlroy won the Wells Fargo for the fourth time. However, not every star has lifted a trophy recently. Some are adding the years since they won. Here's a look at some PGA Tour stars who are looking to end lengthy win droughts in 2025. It's coming up on two years since Burns took down good friend Scottie Scheffler in the semis at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play in 2023 before a thrilling final against Cam Young, but the 19th ranked golfer in the world has yet to win since. Perhaps 2025 can be the year he gets PGA Tour win No. 6. The eight-time PGA Tour winner captured the 2022 BMW Championship, defending his title at the event. But heading into 2025, Cantlay is creeping up on three years without a victory and recently fell outside of the top 10 in the OWGR for the first time since June of 2021. Finau went through a stretch in 2022-23 where he won four times in 19 starts, including three wins in a seven-start stretch the latter half of 2022. But he hasn't won since the 2023 Mexico Open and is recovering from recent knee surgery. Hovland won the FedEx Cup and Tour Championship in 2023, and since then, it has been a spiral. He missed the cut in three of the four majors in 2024, though he seemed to find his groove toward the end of the year. He recently broke his pinky toe, however, and will try to play through the pain at The Sentry. Homa won on the DP World Tour late last year and had a strong week defending earlier this month, but his last PGA Tour win came nearly two years ago at the 2023 Farmers. Perhaps the West Coast Swing can result in another win for the California kid. It's hard to believe, but Adam Scott is coming up on five years since his last PGA Tour win at the 2020 Genesis Invitational. He's ranked 18th in the world thanks to a strong stretch of golf in 2024, but does the Aussie have a few more Ws in him? Who knows what to expect from Spieth in 2025 after wrist surgery in late August. He hasn't won since the 2022 RBC Heritage, including a playoff loss to Matt Fitzpatrick in the same event a year later. Last but not least, Thomas hasn't won since capturing his second major at the 2022 PGA Championship at Southern Hills. However, of all golfers on this list, it wouldn't be a surprise to see him win early in 2025. His last two starts of 2024? T-2 at the Zozo and solo third at the Hero.A number of prominent pundits, including former City defender and club ambassador Micah Richards, have questioned why the Belgium international has not been starting games amid the champions’ dramatic slump. City have not won in seven outings in all competitions – their worst run since 2008 – with De Bruyne featuring only as a substitute in the last five of those matches after recovering from a pelvic injury. The latest came with a 12-minute run-out in Sunday’s demoralising 2-0 defeat at Premier League leaders Liverpool, a result which left City 11 points off the pace and fifth in the table. Richards said on The Rest is Football podcast it appeared “there’s some sort of rift going on” between De Bruyne and Guardiola while former England striker Gary Lineker added: “It seems like all’s not well.” Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher said he felt “something isn’t right” and fellow Sky Sports analyst Gary Neville, the ex-Manchester United right-back, described the situation as “unusual, bizarre, strange”. Guardiola, speaking at a press conference to preview his side’s clash with Nottingham Forest, responded on Tuesday. The Spaniard said: “People say I’ve got a problem with Kevin. Do you think I like to not play with Kevin? No, I don’t want Kevin to play? “The guy who has the most talent in the final third, I don’t want it? I have a personal problem with him after nine years together? “He’s delivered to me the biggest success to this club, but he’s been five months injured (last season) and two months injured (this year). “He’s 33 years old. He needs time to find his best, like last season, step by step. He’ll try to do it and feel better. I’m desperate to have his best.” De Bruyne has not started since being forced off at half-time of City’s Champions League clash with Inter Milan on September 18, having picked up an injury in the previous game. Both the player and manager have spoken since of the pain he was in and the need to ease back into action, but his spell on the bench has been unexpectedly long. The resulting speculation has then been exacerbated because De Bruyne is in the final year of his contract but Guardiola maintains nothing untoward has occurred. He said: “I’d love to have the Kevin in his prime, 26 or 27. He would love it to – but he is not 26 or 27 any more. “He had injuries in the past, important and long ones. He is a guy who needs to be physically fit for his space and energy. You think I’m complaining? It’s normal, it’s nature. “He’s played in 10 or 11 seasons a lot of games and I know he is desperate to help us. He gives glimpses of brilliance that only he can have. “But, always I said, he himself will not solve our problems, like Erling (Haaland) won’t solve it himself. We attack and defend together. “We want the best players back. Hopefully step by step the confidence will come back and we’ll get the best of all of us.”

Tom Bartee’s long tenure in the Legislature came to an end on on Wednesday with the completion of State Senator Bill Dodd’s second term also coming to an end at the end of the month. “It has been a great ride working for some terrific legislators; Senator Pat Wiggins, Assemblymember Michael Allen, Assembly Member Mariko Yamada and Bill Dodd in the Assembly and Senate,” Bartee said in an email to the Times-Herald. “I have learned so much, met so many diverse constituents and seen an incredible amount of interesting things over the years in this journey with my Teammates, colleagues and constituents.” Bartee said that working for Dodd has been an honor and one of the highlights of his 60 years of employment. He also had praise for Chris Cabaldon taking over Dodd’s spot. “It has been a pleasure to have worked on “Team Dodd” in accomplishing the many things he achieved through his 10 years of leadership is in the Legislature,” Bartee said. “Senator-Elect Cabaldon will take office seamlessly as he is well prepared and educated in the inner workings of Local, Regional and State Level politics including his many years creating the vision for the revitalization and redevelopment of West Sacramento.”Companies tighten security after a health care CEO's killing leads to a surge of threats

Rutaremara, 80, has a political career spanning over five decades and has held numerous roles, including serving as Ombudsman and chaired the commission that drafted the 2003 constitution. The bureau consists of the Chairperson and Vice Chairperson, who are responsible for leading the council's activities, preparing meetings, implementing resolutions, and coordinating with other government bodies to ensure smooth collaboration. The Council of Elders’ decisions are reached through consensus; however, if consensus is not possible, an absolute majority vote among the members present will determine the outcome. A former NFL star has accused Vice President Kamala Harris of being intoxicated during her speech to Americans on Wednesday. Harris, who lost the 2024 presidential election to Donald Trump in early November, gave a speech to dejected Democrats on Wednesday. However, many are taking to social media to talk about her appearance in the speech. The full speech has gone viral on social media, as it was posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. “I just have to remind you: Don’t you ever let anybody take your power from you,” Harris stated in the clip posted to the Democratic Party’s account. “You have the same power that you did before November 5, and you have the same purpose that you did. And you have the same ability to engage and inspire, so don’t ever let anybody or any circumstance take your power from you.” Democratic National Party. Former NFL star Antonio Brown was among those accusing Harris of being intoxicated during her speech. "Drunk Auntie on Thanksgiving...." he wrote. NFL fans are weighing in on the accusation. "She started before the Lions game came on, I know that look, I’ve seen it in the mirror by game two," one fan wrote. "She’s definitely gonna be the one making a scene, stumbling around, calling everyone fascist until she starts crying and telling you how much she loves you before she passes out in backyard," one fan added. "Look's exactly like my sixth grade reading teacher, Mrs. Gillis, who had a bottle of "Listerine," that she sipped out of all day," one fan added. "Imagine the Thanksgiving dinner chaos with Kamala Harris at the table! Culture clash or comedy gold?" one fan added. Vice President @KamalaHarris ’ message to supporters. pic.twitter.com/x5xMUGTtkz Brown, of course, isn't one to talk about public appearances. The former NFL star last played in the league in 2022, when he ran off the field at Metlife Stadium with his shirt off. "I took a seat on the sideline and my coach came up to me, very upset, and shouted, 'What's wrong with you? What's wrong with you?' I told him, 'It's my ankle.' But he knew that. It was well-documented and we had discussed it," Brown said of his behavior. "He then ordered me to get on the field. I said, 'Coach, I can't.' He didn't call for medical attention. Instead, he shouted at me, 'YOU'RE DONE!' while he ran his finger across his throat. Coach was telling me that if I didn't play hurt, then I was done with the Bucs." He added: "I know we were losing to the Jets and that was frustrating for all of us. But I could not make football plays on that ankle. Yes, I walked off the field. But there's a major difference between launching from the line and taking hits, compared to jogging off the field with a rush of emotions going through your mind. I am reflecting on my reaction, but there was a trigger. The trigger was someone telling me that I'm not allowed to feel pain." Brown, 36, played in the NFL from 2010-2021. He was a five-time All-Pro, but he's clearly gone off the deep end in recent years. Our cell phone dilemma

A Russian misinformation campaign would only be the latest hurdle for the cult-hit video game, which was released on November 20, after being delayed over three years amid the ongoing war. Its creators have faced missile attacks, cyber-attacks, and the challenges of developing a modern video game as its employees were scattered across Europe fleeing a war. GSC Game World has been an outspoken supporter of Ukraine’s war effort, raising money for a charity that supplies the country’s army with equipment and barring the sale of its titles in Russia. Russian officials have responded in kind. Anton Gorelkin, deputy head of the State Duma’s Information Policy Committee, suggested this month that the game might be banned in Russia and could face “the most severe measures if illegal content is found in the game upon release, such as extremism, justification of terrorism, or incitement of ethnic hatred.” Despite the game’s high profile, its developers said they did not set out to build a “propaganda thing” with the release, where players navigate a post-apocalyptic environment in the shadow of the famous nuclear disaster zone. ”We haven’t made the game a propaganda thing. We didn’t want to be very straightforward,” GSC Game World’s lead producer, Slava Lukyanenka, told the website VG247. “At the same time with the whole team travelling - half of us are in Kyiv, half in Prussia, some are scattered around Europe - we still need to keep delivering. We can’t not reflect it in the game. But we do it indirectly. We do it through the stories, through the environment, through the feeling of decay.” The Independent has contacted GSC Game World for comment. The game’s developers have described a harrowing process of bringing the title to life. "Sitting in that cellar with my wife and my cats, I felt like I was abandoned. But like a ‘stalker,’ you have to learn how to live in such situation," concept artist Anton Kukhtytskyi said in a documentary about the game. "I switched to drawing on paper, so I didn’t stop developing."(The Center Square) – Billionaire and advisor to President-elect Donald Trump Elon Musk was denied by a judge this week a $56 billion compensation package for his work as CEO of Tesla, the successful electric automaker that pioneered EV technology in the U.S. The package had been approved by more than 70% of Tesla's board of directors. A Tesla shareholder who owned just nine shares of stock in the company sued to block the 2018 compensation agreement. In addition to blocking the package this week, the judge in the case, Delaware Chancellor Kathaleen McCormick, awarded the plaintiff's attorneys $345 million, which Reuters reported is “one of the largest fee awards ever in securities litigation.” Javascript is required for you to be able to read premium content.
