My dream Christmas gift would be to sing All I Want For Christmas Is You with her – so Mariah, if you’re reading this, let’s make it happen next year. Gather friends and family and sing some carols I’ve sung a lot of Christmas songs and hymns in shows, and I love them. Silent Night always gets me as it’s such a beautiful song. And, as a proud Scot, I love to sing Donald, Where’s Your Troosers? It is always a laugh and I will play it on my Christmas Day show. Scour the TV listings in advance so you know what to watch...I love a good Christmas movie for a bit of nostalgia and a good old weep. I’ll definitely seek out It’s A Wonderful Life as the classics are always the best. I always watch A Christmas Carol as well. I feel a bit more generous after seeing it. I will definitely pop on the King’s Speech at 3pm. I never used to watch the Queen’s speech as a child – I was too busy eating my selection box – but now I like to see it. As a family, we loved Christmas specials especially The Two Ronnies and The Andy Stewart Show so I’ll hunt those down. Make cooking the dinner as painless as possible If you have my (lack of) cooking prowess, my tip is to let someone else do the work. I tried cooking Christmas dinner once and nothing was ready at the right time. Instead, I sing a few carols and play songs on the piano while enjoying the aromas coming from the kitchen. If you are cooking, my tip is to have the wireless on – it’s the perfect accompaniment. I’ve got lots of friends and family who are great cooks including my sister and bezzie mate Sue so luckily, I never have to worry and always get my pigs in blankets cooked to perfection. I always buy dates as they seem so festive to me, but I actually never get round to eating them. And I do like soup at Christmas. A family favourite is ham hock with lentils and leeks. My brother and I were born in England, but have a big Scottish family so we take the best festive traditions from both. I’m really proud of my Scottish heritage. Last year, I travelled to Scotland for Hogmanay for the first time, which I’d always wanted to do. Some friends and I travelled to Aviemore and had the best time. And wherever I am, I always toast the New Year with a wee dram. Pull a cracker and go around the table so everyone reads out their joke Here’s a joke for you – Why was the turkey in the band? Because he’s the only one with drumsticks. I also like it when everyone wears the paper hat from a cracker as it’s something you only do at Christmas – but there’s always someone who refuses to, isn’t there? Put on a festive jumper I do love a Christmas jumper because they’re so easy – you don’t have to think about what you’re going to wear and you always look festively glam. Switch on as many fairy lights as possible I adore going all out with the decorations. My tree is covered in baubles and lights and I’m pretty sure you can see my house from space. I don’t think I put the big light on for the whole of Christmas. There are those special decorations, the ones that mean the most to you, reminding you of a special memory from when you were a child or a loved one who is no longer with us. I was given a beautiful bauble of me and my late husband Ed. It goes on my tree every year and, of course, he’s always in my heart. Reminisce with loved ones about Christmases past Every Christmas is special with the ones that you love. Getting my first bike as a child is a wonderful Christmas memory, as was eating a whole selection box from my stocking before dinner. Pop in to see a neighbour or friend who might be alone this Christmas Knock on their door and take them a box of chocs. If you are able to, maybe offer them a seat at your dinner table or invite them over for a cuppa. Check in with those people you have been meaning to message or ring, and let them know you are thinking of them. DDG is all sorts of enraged today following a recent collaboration with streamer, plaqueboymax. The rapper and fellow content creator was on his platform, and he participated in a segment similar to "Hot Ones" called "Dry Ones." It's also a Q&A and if you decide to not answer the question posed to you, the person has to eat a Popeyes biscuit. Over the years, I’ve watched so much anime that it’s my go-to when I’m stressed or having a bad day. So, I obviously jumped at the chance to interview Aleks Le. On TV, he’s Zenitsu in Demon Slayer (I literally have his poster on my wall), Thorfinn from Vinland Saga , Shinji Hirako in Bleach and so much more. Le already has an impressive career in Anime and American TV, but has also done lots of video game work as well including parts in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Persona 3 Reload, Zenless Zone Zero, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, Horizon Forbidden West and Solo Leveling: Arise, which is based on the same web novel as his latest project, playing Sung Jin-woo in the Solo Leveling anime. Ahead of the anime’s second season and the recently released movie, we got to chat about all things Sung Jinwoo and what it’s like to be a voice actor. Unfortunately, I didn’t get the opportunity to bother him about his work in Vinland Saga or Demon Slayer. Still , the Korean web novel-turned-anime is a huge hit, and I watched the first season twice (once in Japanese and another in English), so it was an honour to pick his brain about this new series. Here’s the interview: It was really fun for me to do something like that because, it’s not many projects that I get to do a higher range, a lower range and a mid-range. It was just fun to run down the entire vocal range, and the character reminded me a lot of myself. He has a lot of imperfections, flaws, and arrogance that I also had when I was younger starting out in my voice acting career. And when I started, my voice was just as high as the original [Sung Jinwoo]. So it was kind of like a throwback for me to put this younger version of myself into the character. So the way I approached it was that I just put myself in the frame of mind I was in four or five years ago. Then, the later we got into the story, the more I just kind of settled into my natural self. But it was really fun to have that jog down memory Lane [For context, I watched the Solo Leveling ReAwakening movie that shows the first two episodes of season two] He’s [Sung Jinwoo] got a lot of things that he’s working through his head. There are newfound powers, things that he’s not familiar with the system, and there are things that he needs to find out about himself. So he’s a lot more level-headed than he was in the first season, but I think even though he’s more in control of his abilities, he’s also less arrogant about them now. In the first season he was very much like, this is what I have to do – this, this and this. But now he’s more “Okay, I gotta figure this out before I make any drastic moves and decisions.” So he’s a lot more meticulous about his actions now, and I think that’s an interesting way to portray him. Or even a different light to view him through as opposed to the way he ended the first season, which was him being so full of himself when fighting certain opponents. Now, he still has that air of arrogance, but he’s a lot more knowledgeable. And now that he’s more knowledgeable, he’s aware that there are a lot of things that he can work on himself. So there is definitely a huge difference on where we’re taking this character next. Oh, yeah, absolutely. I mean, when we were setting the tone for the character in the first season, it was super hard to nail down who he was and all the little quirks that he has when he speaks. So, as with any character, the first time you’re portraying him is always very important and also very difficult. With a character that changes so much, it’s also very hard to get a hold of. There were a lot of taxing battle scenes and taxing emotional scenes so I think in season two, he’s gotten to a point where he’s found himself enough where we have less of that to work through, but it’s just as demanding to make any moments with him on screen memorable. Just like we did in the first season. I love the scene in episode six from the very first season. A nd that’s the scene where he fights a group of guys. T hat was a really cool moment where you saw him break down a little bit and regain himself with this newfound confidence, and I just thought that was a very memorable scene. I remember us spending a lot of time trying to get that perfect because that was the first time we were introducing his, like, kind of deep, deep voice as well. So, that was really challenging for me. [ I noted that this is the first time Sung Jinwoo killed any humans. Up until this point, he’s only fought monsters.] Yeah, that was the scene when he actually starts killing people for the first time. He kind of hesitates, but then he’s like, no, I have to do this. So we were also playing with that dynamic and how much it affects him as well. I think I’ve seen how it resonates because on TikTok and stuff, there are so many edits of him, and the thing that seems to strike a chord with a lot of people is strength and the ability to improve oneself. Like I’ve seen so many gym edits with the audio from Solo Leveling, and I feel like the message of self-improvement is very much something that everybody strives for. It’s really cool to see people find motivation in that. For me, obviously, the iconic scenes that all the fans love, are the ‘Arise’ scene... But I feel that there are a lot of very memorable and fan-favourite moments from the show that people love to reference and come back to. Each stage of his life has a different defining moment, and [there’s] one that I’m looking forward to in particular. We got a little bit of it in season one, where he interacts with some people here and there, and sometimes it’s funny. Sometimes it’s really cool. I’m just excited to see more of that because now we’re going to start to see the main cast of characters interact with him for the very first time. Beyond just like, “Hey, I know you,” they’re gonna be like, “Oh so this is who we’re dealing with,” and I’m super excited for everybody to find out about it and just see how we interact with everybody else. [ I mention that I particularly like his interaction with one of his new summons who’s kind of a dumb kind of character] And that summons, those are kind of exciting and funny interactions that I’m super looking forward to as well, so that’ll be very, very cool. I feel like there is a trend in my career where I play a lot of characters with two sides to them. Or multiple different personalities, and I find that really funny that a lot of my jobs do require me to have different voices or different attitudes of the same character. But this one was definitely challenging in the sense that the dialogue was very important. So, we had to put so much effort into making sure the writing and the delivery were as good as they could be. Um, so anime-wise, this might be the hardest one that I’ve had to do so far. I’m grateful for it because it’s an amazing challenge. I’m also very, very happy with our end product, and I’m glad a lot of people are enjoying it as well. Vocally though. I mean, there are a ton of other projects where I have to go very extreme with my vocals, but this one is no joke either. This one has a lot of demands. I would say. It really just depends on the day. Some days, this is easy for me. Some days this is hard. So for the most part, everything is hard until you finish doing it. I was going to say I would love the ability to summon Shadows, but the thing about Shadows is that it has to be somebody freshly deceased, and I don’t see myself trying to kill anybody any time soon. So I don’t think I could use that power as effectively, or I don’t think I’d want to use that power. But he has the ability to access the shop, which I don’t think people talk about enough. I think that’s the coolest ability in the show because he can buy potions or daggers and weapons and armour, and I’m like; I would love to have a shop. If I’m low on energy, I’d love just to buy an energy drink from the shop, or if I’m feeling sick, I’d love to get a healing potion, you know. So I think the best ability to have is the shop. Be ready to... he chuckles... it sounds negative, but be ready to fail. With an industry like acting, you’re never guaranteed a job. People think, oh, just because he’s in a lot of things, that means that I’ve always been successful. No, I fail more than I succeed. Because every single job that I’m a part of, I had to audition and basically battle hundreds if not thousands of other voice actors to get the part. So, every time you’re auditioning for something, you’re going up against a lot of people and just be aware that if somebody’s better than you for the role, that doesn’t mean you’re really bad; it doesn’t mean that you suck, it just means that you didn’t get it this time and you just gotta be ready to fail. There’s a lot of failure in this line of work; you just have to be mentally prepared to keep failing. If you don’t deal well with failure, this isn’t the job for you. Solo Leveling season two will premiere on Crunchyroll in January 2025.Mae Sot, a town on the Thai-Myanmar border in Tak province, is notorious as a hub for cross-border human trafficking and transnational organised crime run by Chinese mafia syndicates. Despite this, government action has been grossly inadequate to combat the problem. During a recent visit to Mae Sot to review anti-human trafficking efforts, Pol Lt Gen Prachuab Wongsuk, acting deputy national police chief, identified the town as the country's top hotspot for cross-border human trafficking, online scams, gambling, and other illegal activities. This is not surprising. Each year, thousands of victims from various countries are lured by fake high-paying job offers to work in Thailand, but are funnelled through Mae Sot to Myawaddy, Myanmar's border town opposite Mae Sot, to work for Chinese scam operations. According to victims, they are swept through immigration at Bangkok's international airports and driven through border checkpoints to Mae Sot without issue. Some are even flown directly to Mae Sot. Undeniably, local corruption is involved. Once in Myawaddy, the victims are imprisoned, their phones confiscated, they are forced into debt bondage, and are forced to scam people worldwide. Those who refuse or fail to meet quotas face torture, including beatings, electrocution, and other abuse. They must pay a ransom if they want to be released. While the Chinese operators carry out the torture, the facilities are guarded by the Karen Border Guard Force (BGF) and the Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA), two armed groups operating in Myanmar's Karen State. In addition to Thais, human trafficking victims come from various countries, including Laos, the Philippines, Iraq, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Morocco, Kenya, and others. On Oct 26, the Civil Society Network for Victim Assistance in Human Trafficking, a human rights NGO, sent an open letter to Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, calling for the immediate rescue of 110 victims and action to stop Chinese syndicates using Mae Sot to traffic people into Myanmar. The group also appealed to the BGF, DKBA, the Defence Ministry, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for rescue operations. Nothing has happened. Several embassies have contacted the network to help rescue their citizens held by Chinese mafia groups, pushing the number of human trafficking victims seeking help to over 500. Thailand can no longer ignore this issue. According to the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau, online scams run by these Chinese criminal networks cost Thailand at least 50 million baht every day. This not only harms the country's productivity but also worsens its struggling economy. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) reported that East and Southeast Asia lost between $18–37 billion to online scams in 2023 -- around 648 billion to 1.3 trillion baht. Meanwhile, the United States Institute of Peace (USIP) estimated these syndicates globally stole nearly $64 billion a year, or about 2.28 trillion baht. Apart from economic damage, the criminal networks have co-opted political and business elites in host countries, worsening corruption, fueling money politics and undermining democratic principles. While the scam compounds operate in Myanmar, Laos, and Cambodia, Thailand cannot deny its role as a transit hub for trafficking victims exploited by these Chinese syndicates. According to Usip, thousands of victims from 60 countries have been trafficked and enslaved in the Southeast Asian scam industry. This level of crime would not be possible if Thailand were more effective in stopping it. The acting deputy police chief recently visited a group of scam victims in Mae Sot on Nov 12. His team found a group of Chinese people who had arrived suspiciously, claiming they were tourists heading to Pattaya but had been unknowingly driven to Mae Sot by a taxi driver. The police freed all concerned, including the taxi driver, and announced to the media that they had rescued a group of Chinese people from human trafficking. Case closed. This is not just inefficiency; it's a dangerous failure of duty that allows human trafficking to continue unchecked. It's true that the power, reach, and advanced technology of the cyber fraud industry require international cooperation to stop and punish them. However, Thailand cannot ignore its responsibility to take legal action against crimes happening within its borders -- especially against corrupt officials and those involved in money laundering. Additionally, the government must address the telecommunications infrastructure enabling these online call centres. Thailand must stop being a silent partner in this transnational crime before more lives are destroyed.

For me, the month has evolved from a time of calm reflection into a month of haves and wants. National Geographic’s "Tsunami: Race Against Time" chronicles the ravaging impact of the 2004 Indian Ocean eruption on Thailand and numerous other Southeast Asian countries. It hit me hard and gave me the jolt to ask myself how to get off the consumer train. Southeast Asia has my heart; my family and I lived in Asia beginning in the early 2000s. Our children were little then, and we established a set of holiday traditions that meant Christmas in Bangkok with minimal gifts and maximum adventures. The Thais are beautiful people, welcoming and gracious. The Dec. 26, 2004, earthquake and resulting tsunami in the Indian Ocean wrecked countless lives. It killed nearly a quarter of a million people in that region, including thousands of Thais and tourists. The documentary is spellbinding. The viewer becomes a participant in the unbelievable scenery and chaotic devastation the giant waves caused in the early hours of the day after Christmas. Watching the four-part series on a streaming platform created an alarming experience of seeing the water washing away beachgoers, buildings, and even a train. Frequent advertising, however, distracted from and contrasted with the presentation. Ads for mobile phones, fast-food restaurants and shoes horrifyingly broke up the narrative every few minutes: T-Mobile, Chick-fil-A, and DSW in between actual human misery. Relentless phone ads foreshadowed the documentary’s disaster just before smartphones became omnipresent. Ironically, frantic scientists in the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Honolulu were tracking the earthquake and tsunami in real time and struggled as they had few options to warn the millions of people who dotted the ocean’s coastlines and were exposed and vulnerable to the massive waves. Today's ads show an American life that seems superficial, too loud, too brightly lit, and primed for consumption compared with 20 years ago. Toggling between the ads and the documentary left me thinking about how to revise my forecast. I don't want to be an extreme version of humankind. Too many technology advancements are going somewhere scary where we all require experiences and stuff on demand, catered precisely to our highly refined sense of personal algorithms. I know a lot of good comes from the high-tech advancements, including ways to help warn about natural disasters such as future tsunamis. What is not good is the louder, self-focused lives presently occupied. I will do better in 2025. I will think more about how to spend my time, effort, and money and try to pay back. El Salvador's Congress on Monday approved a bill promoted by President Nayib Bukele to roll back a ban on the mining of gold and other metals, dismaying environmentalists. The small Central American nation became the world's first country to outlaw metal mining in 2017, warning of the harmful effects of the chemicals used, like cyanide and mercury. The move by Bukele's predecessor, former left-wing rebel Salvador Sanchez Ceren, reflected a growing rejection of mining by rural communities in the region. But last month, Bukele, who is popular at home for his crackdown on street gangs, signaled that he wanted to change course. The bill to bring back metal mining was approved by 57 deputies out of a total of 60, said Ernesto Castro, head of the legislature -- which is dominated by the ruling party -- as environmental campaigners protested nearby. Critics fear that mining will pollute the Lempa River, which runs through a potential mining zone proposed by Bukele and supplies water to 70 percent of the inhabitants of the capital and surrounding areas. "This wretched mining will punish the people, it will contaminate our waters and rivers and that's an attack on life," activist Vidalina Morales told reporters. Bukele said last month that El Salvador, a country of 6.6 million people, had "potentially" the largest gold deposits per square kilometer in the world. "God placed a gigantic treasure underneath our feet," he wrote on social media, arguing that the mining ban was "absurd." "If we make responsible use of our natural resources, we can change the economy of El Salvador overnight," he said. The new law stipulates that the state will be the only entity authorized to search for, extract and process mined metals. However, the government may do so through companies in which it is a shareholder. The bill prohibits the use of mercury in mining operations, which may not be carried out in protected natural areas or places with important water sources. A survey by Central American University published on Monday revealed that 59 percent of respondents do not consider El Salvador "an appropriate country for metal mining." Since El Salvador dollarized its remittances-reliant economy in 2001, it has registered average annual growth of 2.1 percent. Twenty-seven percent of Salvadorans live in poverty, according to the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, and 70 percent of the workforce operates in the informal sector. Qatar tribune As the Ukraine war, launched by the imperialist invasion by Russian despot Vladimir Putin, passed its 1,000-day mark this month, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s troops are newly empowered by the Biden administration to use long-range ATACMS missiles to attack targets in Russia, which they did. And Moscow responded by launching its own new mid-range ballistic missile. Biden is also sending antipersonnel mines to Ukraine, marking a couple significant shifts in strategy in his waning weeks at the helm. What everyone knows is that this late flurry of aid for Kyiv’s defenses may soon change. Donald Trump, with his dangerous America First isolationism, wants out of foreign wars and could leave Ukraine to be mauled and consumed by the Russian bear. He’s said that he intends to end the war “in one day,” which seems to include the idea of significant and unacceptable concessions to Russia and Putin, a strongman whose style Trump has often seemed to admire. Of course, this terrible war should not be prolonged. Even Zelenskyy expressed some optimism that Trump might be able to help end the war sooner, to some extent due to his existing credibility in the Kremlin. There’s a world here where the clarity of Trump’s non-commitment to both Ukraine and the global Western security apparatus and alliances like NATO at least pushes European allies to step up and help broker an end to the conflict that does not constitute a Russian victory. This, however, is only possible if Russia comes to feel that this victory is not possible, or at least comes at too extravagant a cost. That means that Ukraine needs to continue to have the tools not just to defend itself but to strike back, as it has begun doing with the long-range missiles. For its part, Russia has suffered estimated military casualties, including killed and wounded, in excess of 700,000, destroyed its military readiness, is in the midst of uncontrolled inflation and seems destined to at best have an incredibly Pyrrhic victory. Now, it will suffer heavier casualties and infrastructural damage on its own soil from Ukraine’s latest weapons. This doesn’t mean that Ukraine has the upper hand, per se, but it does mean that this is a grinding stalemate that no one really wants to continue. Russia has been increasingly desperate for an edge, now allowing thousands of North Korean troops to join the fray, committed to saving face to protect the aspirations and public image of its despotic leader. But the tides can turn quickly if Ukraine’s means to defend itself begin drying up. So let the Biden administration shore that up for now, and we hope that Trump’s lean towards a Russia-favoring resolution is tempered in the months until he takes office. History and common sense point to a series of escalating consequences if an aggressive and expansionist Russia is allowed to win this war outright in the ways it had initially set out to do — seizing large swaths of territory and rewiring the social and political fabric of the land. Putin will not be appeased, or satisfied with this meal at Ukraine’s expense. He’ll always want more, which is why he must be stopped. The 6-foot-1 sixth-year senior from Chicago has recorded 27 tackles, three interceptions and a team-high seven pass breakups in 10 games for the Hawkeyes this season. That includes a pick-6 in a 38-21 win over Troy earlier this season. Iowa (6-4, 4-3 Big Ten) plays at Maryland on Saturday before closing out its regular season at home against Nebraska on Nov. 29. The Hawkeyes are already bowl eligible, so Harris is likely opting out of three games in total. One such technology is Piezo-intracytoplasmic sperm injection (Piezo-Icsi), an improved and gentler Icsi egg fertilisation technique. Dr Kelly Loi, medical director and fertility consultant at Monash IVF Singapore , explains: “In conventional Icsi, a sharp needle is used to inject healthy sperm into the egg by puncturing its outer shell or membrane. While effective, this method can sometimes damage fragile eggs, especially in older women. With Piezo-Icsi, a blunt needle coupled with micro-vibrating motion, are used instead. This approach is gentler and reduces the risk of harming the egg.” According to Dr Loi, the potential advantages of this procedure include better fertilisation rate with fewer eggs being damaged. The availability of more fertilised eggs may also potentially also contribute to better in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) success rates for women aged 38 and older who have fragile egg membranes, lower egg count and poor fertilisation rates from previous IVF attempts, she says. Monash IVF Singapore – established in 2021 and which recently moved into a 5,000 sq ft standalone centre in Novena – has been offering its patients the Piezo-Icsi treatment since September this year for patients undergoing IVF. Dr Loi highlights a recent study published earlier this year by scientists at Monash IVF in Australia. The study involved 108 patients who underwent both conventional Icsi and Piezo-Icsi procedures. Results showed a higher fertilisation rate of 71.6 per cent with Piezo-Icsi , compared to 65.6 per cent with conventional Icsi. In addition, the embryo quality was also increased. IVF is a process where the sperm and egg are combined in a petri dish and the resulting fertilised embryo is placed back into the woman’s uterus. As most of its patients have their fertilised embryos transferred during a frozen embryo transfer (FET) cycle, Monash IVF will also be performing the transfer of these embryos in the new facility, notes Dr Loi. Dr Loi explains: “Fresh embryo transfers are performed soon after the eggs are collected. This is opposed to frozen embryo transfers where embryos are frozen first and transferred later. By doing frozen embryo transfers, patients have time to recover from the side effects of the hormone injections given during an IVF cycle. The clinician also has time to optimise the uterus for embyro implantation.” These fertility treatment procedures are a result of close collaboration between scientists and clinicians, adds Dr Loi. “With women getting married at a later age as well as couples postponing starting a family, there tends to be a higher incidence of gynaecological issues that often require concurrent treatment and Monash IVF addresses these needs,” she adds. A full spectrum of fertility solutions in one place Dr Suresh Nair, co-founder of Monash IVF Singapore, was motivated to bring the Australian-based fertility centre to a region where he has noticed a growing demand for advanced reproductive health services. An animal farm in eastern Ontario wants your Christmas trees for its goats, sheep, alpacas and cattle to feed on. Vanderlaand The Barnyard Zoo in Winchester, Ont., a petting zoo, takes about 150 trees every year and uses them to feed and shelter its animals, owner Ruth Vanderlaan told CTV News Ottawa Sunday. “They do like the fresh needles,” she said. “But they will clean them right up. It's usually like a toothpick.” The farm is a family activity that attracts people living in North Dundas and the Ottawa region. “I just love tossing things over fences,” said visitor, Willow Green, while watching the goats quickly grabbing the tree branches up. Mom Erin Kergin was also visiting the zoo with her kids Sunday. She says visiting has become an annual tradition. “It’s so wonderful,” she said. “Recycling the tree, so no scraps go to waste. And that the kids actually get to see the goats and the donkeys and all the animals kind of rejoice that (they get to eat it). It's the second life for their Christmas tree, which is really lovely to see.” The Vanderlaand Barnyard Zoo is open for the Christmas holidays from Dec. 29-31 between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., before being closed for Jan. 1 and 2, 2025 and reopening from the Jan. 3-6 from 11 a.m. to 3pm. Vanderlaan says if you would like a chance to feed the animals, you can come during opening hours.
