The Israeli military says it has killed a militant who took part in the October 7, 2023 Hamas attacks on Israel and who it says was employed by the World Central Kitchen charity in the Gaza Strip. or signup to continue reading The official Palestinian news agency WAFA reported that three employees of World Central Kitchen were killed when an Israeli strike targeted a civilian vehicle in Khan Younis, in the enclave's south. The military did not offer any evidence and Reuters could not independently verify the man's identity and whether he took part in the attack on Israel last year. There was no immediate comment from World Central Kitchen on the Israeli statement. Hamas did not immediately comment. Medics in the enclave said that a total of five people were killed in the strike, which they said targeted a vehicle east of Khan Younis. In a later attack in Khan Younis, medics said at least nine Palestinians were killed when an Israeli air strike hit a car near a crowd receiving flour, a vehicle that was used by security personnel tasked with overseeing aid deliveries into the Gaza Strip. The Israeli military rejects allegations that it deliberately targets civilians in its Gaza campaign, accusing Hamas of operating from civilian facilities and using civilians as shields, which the group denies. Overall, at least 32 Palestinians were killed in Israeli strikes across the enclave overnight and into Saturday, Gaza medics said. Among those, at least seven died in an Israeli strike on a house in central Gaza City, according to a statement from the Gaza Civil Defence and WAFA early on Saturday. Meanwhile leaders of Hamas were expected to arrive in Cairo on Saturday for ceasefire talks with Egyptian officials, days after Israel and Hezbollah agreed to a ceasefire in Lebanon, two officials of the group told Reuters. The visit is the first since the United States announced earlier this week it would revive efforts in collaboration with Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey to negotiate a ceasefire in Gaza. The Hamas delegation is expected to meet with Egyptian security officials to explore ways to reach a ceasefire deal with Israel that could secure the release of hostages in return for Palestinian prisoners. Progress before now has been limited in a series of on-off talks over months. Hamas is seeking an agreement that would end the war while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated that the war will end only when Hamas is eradicated. Israel's military campaign in the Gaza Strip has killed at least 44,382 people and displaced nearly all of the enclave's population at least once, Gaza officials say. Vast swathes of the Gaza Strip lie in ruins. The conflict was triggered 13 months ago when Hamas-led militants attacked southern Israeli communities, killing about 1200 people and capturing 250 hostages, according to Israeli officials. Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau flies to Florida to meet with Trump after tariffs threat WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has flown to Florida to have dinner with President-elect Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago club after Trump threatened to impose sweeping tariffs on Canadian products. Joining Trump and Trudeau at dinner were Trump's picks for commerce secretary, interior secretary and national security adviser, and the three men's wives. From the Canadian side, the dinner guests included Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc, whose responsibilities include border security. Trump’s transition did not respond to questions about what they had discussed or whether the conversation alleviated Trump’s concerns about the border. A smiling Trudeau declined comment upon returning to his West Palm Beach hotel late Friday. Emboldened 'manosphere' accelerates threats and demeaning language toward women after US election CHICAGO (AP) — An emboldened fringe of right-wing “manosphere” influencers has seized on Donald Trump’s presidential win to justify and amplify misogynistic derision and threats online. Many have appropriated a 1960s abortion rights rallying cry, declaring “Your body, my choice,” and have been using it publicly on college campuses and even in public schools. While none of the current online rhetoric is being amplified by Trump, experts say many young men see the former president’s return to the White House as vindication of their views on women. For many women, the words are a worrying sign of what might lie ahead as some men perceive the election results as a rebuke of reproductive rights and women’s rights. Syrian insurgents are inside Aleppo in a major setback for Assad as government forces regroup BEIRUT (AP) — Thousands of Syrian insurgents have fanned out inside Syria's largest city Aleppo a day after storming it with little resistance from government troops. Syria's army said troops have redeployed to prepare for a counteroffensive. Witnesses said insurgents were seen Saturday at landmarks in Aleppo for the first time since 2016, when they were expelled by government forces backed by Russia and Iran. The surprise offensive is a major embarrassment for Syrian President Bashar Assad, who has regained total control of the city eight years ago. Israeli strike in Gaza allegedly kills workers with World Central Kitchen charity DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — An Israeli airstrike on a car in Gaza has killed five people, according to a senior Palestinian health official. An aid worker says three of the people killed were employees of the charity World Central Kitchen. The charity's aid delivery efforts in Gaza were temporarily suspended earlier this year after an Israeli strike killed seven of its workers. Israel's military says it struck a wanted militant who had been involved in the Hamas attack that sparked the war. In a later statement, it said that the alleged attacker had worked with WCK and it asked “senior officials from the international community and the WCK administration to clarify” how that had come about. Lebanese fisherman hope ceasefire with Israel means normal life returning TYRE, Lebanon (AP) — The ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah is bringing hope for normality back to many in southern Lebanon. That includes fishermen who’ve long launched their single-engine wooden boats into the Mediterranean at dawn. For months, Israel imposed a siege that kept hundreds of fishermen at this ancient Phoenician port ashore. That upended their lives and dealt the industry a major blow. The port siege also cut people off from key ingredients for traditional Lebanese dishes. As war devastated their country, the loss of fish damaged a deep association with home. Now, the possibility of renewed fishing is helping fuel hope. How Brazilian police say Bolsonaro plotted a coup to stay in office SAO PAULO (AP) — Brazil’s Federal Police have formally accused former far-right President Jair Bolsonaro and 36 others of plotting a coup to keep him in office. The plot was allegedly comprised of several components and substantiated by evidence and testimony in the agency's 884-page report. The pieces of the puzzle include laying the groundwork by systematically sowing distrust of the electoral system among the populace. It also includes drafting a decree to give the plot a veneer of legal basis and pressuring top military brass to go along with the plan. Bolsonaro and his main allies have denied any wrongdoing or involvement and accuse authorities of political persecution. More than 100 arrested as Georgian police clash with protesters over suspension of EU talks TBILISI, Georgia (AP) — More than 100 demonstrators were arrested overnight in Georgia as protesters clashed with police following the government’s decision to suspend negotiations to join the European Union, the country’s Interior Ministry said. Friday marked the second straight night of protests after Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze of the country’s ruling Georgian Dream party announced the suspension the previous day. The Associated Press saw protesters in Tbilisi being chased and beaten by police as demonstrators rallied in front of the country's parliament building. The violence follows Georgian Dream’s disputed victory in the Oct. 26 election, which was widely seen as a referendum on the country’s aspirations to join the European Union. Romania's parliamentary vote risks being overshadowed by presidential race chaos BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — Romanians are preparing to go to the polls in a parliamentary vote that will determine a new government and prime minister to lead the European Union and NATO member country. However, Sunday's vote is sandwiched between a two-round presidential race and is overshadowed by controversies and chaos following the outcome of the first vote. While the president has significant decision-making powers in areas such as national security and foreign policy, the prime minister is the head of the nation’s government. Sunday’s vote will determine the formation of the country’s 466-seat legislature. North Korea's Kim vows steadfast support for Russia’s war in Ukraine SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said his country will “invariably support” Russia’s war in Ukraine as he met Russia's visiting defense chief. A Russia military delegation led by Defense Minister Andrei Belousov arrived in North Korea on Friday as international concerns about the two countries’ expanding cooperation deepened after North Korea sent thousands of troops to Russia. During a Friday meeting, Kim and Belousov reached “a satisfactory consensus” on issues on how to further boost strategic partnership and defend each country’s sovereignty and security interests, state media said. Great Lakes, Plains and Midwest forecast to be hit with snow and dangerous cold into next week BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — The first big snow of the season has the potential to bury towns in New York along lakes Erie and Ontario during a hectic holiday travel and shopping weekend. Forecasters says winter storm conditions could persist into next week and cause hazards in the Great Lakes, Plains and Midwest regions. Forecasters predict 4 to 6 feet of blowing and drifting snow could fall in Watertown and other areas east of Lake Ontario through Monday. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul has declared a disaster emergency in affected areas.

PSG win again to retain lead over second-placed Monaco

While Cleveland heads into Sunday's home matchup with the reigning NBA champion Boston Celtics sporting the league's best record, the Cavaliers also come in trying to avoid a three-game losing streak. Cleveland had its 15-game winning streak to open the season interrupted in its last meeting with Boston, a 120-117 win for the host Celtics on Nov. 19. The Cavaliers recovered with a pair of wins over Toronto and New Orleans, but fell in meetings with the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday and Friday. A 20-point, 22-assist game from Trae Young on Wednesday powered Atlanta to 135 points, the most Cleveland has allowed this season. The Hawks followed the 11-point win in Cleveland with a 16-point rout of the Cavaliers on Friday in Atlanta. The consecutive losses dropped Cleveland to 17-3, tied with Boston for the NBA's best mark in the loss column. The Cavaliers maintain the league's best winning percentage at .850 but are trying to avoid their first three-game losing streak since last April. Cleveland Cavaliers head coach Kenny Atkinson reacts in the fourth quarter against the Atlanta Hawks at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse. "Our defensive engagement was good," Cleveland coach Kenny Atkinson said, contrasting Friday's loss with Wednesday's. "(But) our offense kind of tanked. It's hard to be mad at our guys. They've been phenomenal offensively." The Cavaliers ranked No. 20 in points per game a season ago with 112.6. In their first season under Atkinson as coach, they lead the NBA in scoring at 122.4. Friday's contest was Cleveland's lowest-scoring output of the season despite 29 points from Darius Garland and 24 from Evan Mobley. Donovan Mitchell managed less than half of his season average (24.1) with 12, while 14.5-point per game scorer Jarrett Allen managed just six. The Cavaliers look to get back on track against a Celtics team riding a seven-game winning streak. The Celtics, averaging the NBA's second-highest point-per-game output at 121.2, have bookended their streak with 139 points in a rout at Brooklyn on Nov. 13 and 138 points in a win Friday at Chicago. Jayson Tatum scored 35 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in Boston's nine-point defeat of the Bulls. He is averaging 28.7 points, which includes his 33-point performance in the win over the Cavaliers. In Friday's NBA Cup win, Boston also got a huge performance off the bench from Payton Pritchard. His 29 points (19 in the fourth quarter) came on the heels of a 20-point outing in the Celtics' 126-94 home blowout of the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday. "The key to him is he finds different ways to impact games. He's grown as a player over the course of his career," Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla said of Pritchard. "He's a complete player. I know it sounds weird, but he's one of the best three-level scorers I've seen for his size, and he's just a high-level competitor." At 15.6 points per game, Pritchard is one of five Celtics averaging more than 12 points along with Tatum, Jaylen Brown (24.7), Derrick White (18.3) and Jrue Holiday (12.1). --Field Level Media

VESTAL — It had been a quarter of a century since the Salamanca football team last booked itself a spot in the NYS Final. A streak that was snapped as the Warriors emerged victorious in their business trip to Vestal High School where they took down Section 4 Champion Chenango Forks by a score of 34-13 in a NYSPHSAA Class C Semifinal. After a grueling, time-draining affair in which his Warriors answered his calls to respond to setbacks, Salamanca coach Chad Bartoszek told his team in their post-game huddle that what he saw was “football at its highest caliber.” “That game had everything,” Bartoszek said. “That game had it all. We knew that (first) third-quarter drive by Chenango was going to be their ‘Mike Tyson uppercut.’ They brought it too. They drive down and score (and) they hold us. That's the difference in this year's team, though, they responded to that punch. Were able to put together a drive and Maddox (Isaac) made a couple plays today that weren't scripted, he called them. Defensively, what can you say? Man, they were all over the field, flying. (Chenango Forks is) a tough out right there, and it's a storied program.” In the buildup to their semifinal appearance, Bartoszek had been emphasizing the importance of coming up with the answers when posed with setbacks or challenges. Something his team was unable to do last year when they fell to Waverly in the NYSPHSAA Semifinal. This year, the Warriors answered with a score of their own after conceding a touchdown on the back of a near-nine minute opening drive from the Blue Devils. They responded once again after Chenango Forks scored on its first drive of the second half by scoring 19 unanswered points. The second-half response from his team was critical according to Bartoszek. He knew that there was not a point where they could take their foot off the pedal considering how comfortable their opponent was in close games. “(The message at) half time was just expecting their best punch,” Bartoszek said. “We just told these guys that that program over there has been in this game before. In fact, they were in it against Waverly in (their) sectional final. So they were coming out of half OK, they felt good. We had to respond.” And while Salamanca’s streak of scoring 40-plus points in each postseason game so far this year may be over, Bartoszek won’t mind much considering how his team matched the physicality they were confronted with. “You had to match that team over there, you had to match their physicality,” Bartoszek said. “I know we have it, but it just keeps coming at you. You're in a fist fight. I hate to use all these violent terms to describe what just happened, but that's what it was, and we knew that's what it was going to be. We can play the fast game. We had to answer the physicality.” A LARGE part of the physicality the Warriors brought came in the form of hard-fought runs from quarterback Maddox Isaac and running back Xavier Peters. “(The strong runs) gave us a lot of energy,” Isaac said. “It gave us light on the outside, it gave us the ability to spread the ball on the outside as well as put it up the middle. ... They had a lot of kids in the box that could play well.” Isaac ran the ball 14 times for 54 yards while Peters took 17 handoffs for 138 yards and a touchdown. The majority of the damage Isaac, who Bartoszek credited as just having played the “game of his career,” did was through the air. He went 5-for-9 on passing attempts, recording 111 yards and connecting with Cory Holleran, Payton Bradley and Zach Trietley for three passing touchdowns. But it was not just the offense that managed to bring the heat to Chenango Forks. Defensively, Salamanca came away with a number of crucial stops, forced two fumbles, both of which it recovered, and reeled in an interception to all-but seal the win. Trietley led the Warriors with 14 total tackles with Holleran and Warrick Kyler also notching double-figures in that department with 12 and 11 respectively. With the win under its belt, Salamanca avenged their loss from a season ago and according to Isaac, is a dream come true for the team. “It's surreal, man, you dream about this as a kid, going to the state championship, but you never really think it's real, especially being in a small town like Salamanca,” Isaac said. “I think we're one of the smallest schools in the state in Class C. So, coming out and playing like this, it's insane.” Now, the Warriors will have a shot at the state title. In order to bring home the big prize, they will need to defeat Section 2 Champion Schuylerville at the JMA Dome at Syracuse University. Kickoff for that game will be at 12 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7.
